Military Bridging Equipment

A river crossing requires specific procedures for success because the water obstacle inhibits ground maneuver in the usual way. It demands detailed planning and different technical support than other tactical operations. Extensive use of corps engineer assets are required. It is critical for supporting corps engineers to be totally involved in all facets of the river-crossing operation from initial planning through preparation and execution.

A bridge operation requires a continuous traffic flow to the river. Units must be briefed and sent to the crossing site quickly. To accomplish this, engineers brief at staging areas and check vehicle load classification and dimensional clearances. Vehicles maintain a maximum speed of 9 kph while crossing the bridge. Vehicles must not stop on the bridge. Operators must not shift or make abrupt changes in speed on the bridge. Vehicles maintain the interval indicated by signs on the side of the road. Operators follow the signals of engineers at ramps and intervals along the bridge.

Organizing and training for war fighting remains the primary mission of Army engineers. However, engineers can be called on to conduct contingency operations. For example, US Army operations in Bosnia included the mission to bridge the Sava River near Zupanja, Croatia, in December 1995. This mission was the largest river-crossing operation since World War II and was conducted under extreme conditions. Seasonal weather caused the Sava river to swell from its normal width of 300 meters to more than 600 meters. Despite harsh conditions, engineers used Chinook helicopters to deploy ribbon-bridge sections into the river while other engineers rebuilt the approaches and successfully bridged the Sava river to allow elements of the 1st Armored Division to cross. As the floodwater receded, engineers built a causeway across the floodplain. As operations in the area continued, the ribbon bridge remained the only crossing means for both military and civilian traffic while preparations were made for fixed bridging.

Versatile engineers provide unique personnel and equipment capabilities that can effectively support complex and sensitive situations in any contingency operation. Therefore, engineer force-projection planning should include the possibility that forces committed to contingency operations may become involved with combat operations. The engineer commander tailors engineer support based on contingency-operation requirements, which may be radically different than supporting combat operations. In many cases, the only difference between a wartime and an engineer contingency operation is the threat level.

Contingency operations may require the same or a greater level of logistics support to engineers as wartime operations. Combatant commanders tailor logistics support to engineers based on theater needs. Logistics efforts are integrated with host-nation or local resources and activities. Engineers invariably get involved with a wide variety of gap-crossing operations that may need flexible logistics support.

The AVLB is an organic engineer asset that travels with maneuvering armored and mechanized infantry formations and can quickly gap up to 15 meters for 70 MLC vehicles. The assault launcher can launch the bridge without exposing bridge personnel to enemy fire and can retrieve the bridge from either end. The Wolverine will eventually replace the AVLB. The Wolverine will consist of an M1- series Abrams tank chassis modified to transport, launch, and retrieve a MLC 70 bridge. The bridge will be capable of spanning at least a 24-meter gap.

Floating bridges are the primary means to cross the force and its supplies rapidly. The same units that provide heavy rafts also provide float bridges. The ribbon bridge is the primary assault bridge because it is quick to assemble. Ribbon-bridge operations normally last no longer than 72 hours. Having the ribbon bridge remain in operation beyond that time frame presents problems for the engineers that normally would not be experienced during a short duration. Equipment maintenance, anchorage systems, constant changes in the water level, and repair of approaches must be considered for long-term use of assault bridges. As equipment remains in use during crossing operations, maintenance services become more difficult to manage. The M4T6 would replace the ribbon bridge to allow the ribbon bridge to continue to move forward with the advancing force. Because it is man-power intense, the M4T6 is slower to assemble than the ribbon bridge. Preassembly of the M4T6 floats in rear areas significantly reduces the final assembly time on the river.

Fixed bridges rest on the riverbanks and intermediate supports instead of floating on the water. They span ravines as well as rivers. They have limited use for the initial assault because they are slow to assemble and vulnerable to enemy action. Where appropriate, fixed bridges supplement or replace float bridges. Engineers also use fixed bridges to repair existing damaged bridges. The rapid construction characteristics of the MGB versus the Bailey bridge provide it with a better capability that can be used well forward in the main battle area. Since the Army does not currently have a tactical dry-gap capability longer than 60 feet, using the MGB in this role becomes an important operational consideration. The primary role of the MGB is for tactical bridging in the brigade area, while the Bailey bridge is used primarily as a LOC bridge. As the tactical situation permits, the MGB is removed and replaced by Bailey, timber, or steel bridges.

The French Bridging Operations across the Danube in 1809: The First Attempt: May 1809

The source of this document is: Douglas, Howard. An Essay on the Principles and Construction of Military Bridges and the Passage of Rivers in Military Operations 2nd edition; London : Thomas and William Boone; 1832. Pages 183 - 191

Napoleon's first passage of the Danubel in 1809, ought not to have succeeded.

The operations of that celebrated campaign are so instructive in all that relates to the important and difficult enterprise of passing a river, in face of an enemy, that, having treated of most of the constructions used on that occasion, it will be proper to introduce, here, a detailed account of the operation, and of the stupendous means and exertions used in carrying it into effect.

The victories of Eckmuhl and Ebersberg having operned the way to Vienna to the French army, the Archduke Charles, having passed the Danube at Ratisbon, advanced by the left bank of that river to endeavour to succour the capital: but upon hearing of the fall of that city, which surrendered on the 12th of May, he assembled his army, 75,000 strong, near the Bisamberg, a mountain close to the Danube, opposite to Kloster-Neuberg, and about three leagues above Vienna.

As soon as Vienna had fallen, Napoleon resolved to attempt the passage of the Danube, and to attack the army of the Archduke. This project was undertaken with characteristic promptitude and vigour. -- The very day that Vienna surrendered, the attempt was maed near Nussdorf, a town on the right bank of the river, about a league above the city. The ground on the left bank appeared to be extremely favorable for the offensive operations of the Frenc army, and the island opposite to Nussdorf offered considerable facilities for effecting a passage. It was, therefore, dtermined to endeavour to seize and secure that position, before the Austrians should have time to occupy it. A landing was promptly effected on the island with about 1000 men; but before they could be supported, they were attacked by superior numbers, and after a gallant resistance forced to yield.

The unsuccessful issue of this enterprise having obliged Napoleon to alter his plan, he determined to make his next attempt near Ebersdorf, about a league and a half below Vienna, where the river is divided, by two islands, into three branches. The channel nearest the right bank, (Plate 6), is about 430 yards wide. The main, or middle channel, which is only about 273 yards wide, lies between the island A, (Plate 6), and the Lobau. The island Lobau is about 4372 yards across, from N.E. to S.W., and about 2240 yards from N.W. to S.E., convexing, towards Entzersdorf and Essling, in a large, regular curve, round which the left branch of the river flows, in a widt of about 141 yards. This northerly branch is divided into several small channels, by the islands 10, 11, 12, etc. (Plate 6). Nearly opposite to the centre of a line drawn throught he villages of Essling, (Plate 6), and Gros Aspern, (which lies out of the plate about three quarters of a mile,) the river forms a deep, re-entering sinuosity, B C D, extremely favourable for effecting the passage of that branch of the river, and for the construction of a tete-de-pont.

The pontoneers having procured, at Vienna, materials sufficient for the construction of two bridges of boats, the island of Lobau, which the Austrians had but feebly occupied, was taken possession of, on the 18th of May, without much difficulty, by some troops of General Molitor's division, which were transported in row-boats. As soon as they made good their landing, the construction of two bridges of boats (1, 1X Plate 6)) was commenced. The bridge, 1, across the second branch, was formed of Austrian military bateaux: it was commenced at five o'clock in the morning. That across the first branch, 1, was formed of boats of the country, found at Vienna: itwas commenced early on the 19th, and on that day both were finished in time for the whole army to effect it's passage into the Lobau. The construction of a bridge of boats across the third branch, at C, (Plate 6), was commenced in the night of the 19th: for this, fifteen Austrian bateaux were used: -- it was finished in three hours; -- and before day-light on the 20th, three divisions of infantry, and some light cavalry, amounting in all to about 50,000 men, had crossed to the left bank of the Danube, and took position in the plain opposite to Gros Aspern and Essling.

Austrian Pontoons or Military Bateaux

The Archduke, with a part of his advanced guand, immediately reconnoitred the French army; and his cavalry gained some advantages over Napoleon's advanced corps, which, late in the evening, debouched from th low grounds near the river. The Archduke's plan was, not to dispute the passage of the river, but to attack the French army on the following day. With this intention he retired to Anderklau, (about four miles out of the plan,) leaving orders for the advanced corps to fall back, in proportion as the French should advance, and extend their line: -- Napoleon was thus permitted to occupy and establish himself, without resistance, in the villages of Gros Aspern and Essling, and to place his army, in position, between those important posts.

On the morning of the 21st, before the battle of that day commenced, the bridge of boats across the main, or middle channel of the river, was broken by a large vessel which the Austrians sent down the stream for that purpose; but the injury was speedily repaired, and the communication restored, by the activity of the pontoneers placed on duty there.

Towards evening (about 5 o'clock) the Archduke Charles commenced an attack on the French army; and throughout the remainder of that, and all the following day, a furious battle raged. The village of Essling was taken and retaken five times in the course of the 21st; and on the 22d, that village, and Gross Aspern likewise, became the scenes of repeated and sanguinary operations, with alternate success and discomfiture.

During the battle, the Austrians sent down the river, floating bodies of various descriptions, for the purpose of breaking the bridges; and notwithstanding the exertions of the pontoneers and boatmen, placed in surveillance above, both the bridges of boats, 1, 1X, (Plate 6) communicating with the Lobau, werecarried away. The French army was thus placed, for a considerable time, in the greatest of peril. A consciousness of this, so excited the exertions of the pontoneers, that, in the course of the afternoon, both bridges were repaired: but, late in the day, the bridge, 1, (Plate 6) across the first branch was again broken; and from want of materials could not speedily be made good.

If the Archduke Charles had employed the distinguished valour of his toops in preventing the French form issuing from the tete-de-pont, E, (Plate 6); and in defending the villages of Gros Aspern and Essling, which in the actions of the two following days, it cost him so much blood to recover, Napoleon's attempt to establish himself on the left bank of the river, would, in all probability, have been frustrated, without bringing on, and fighting, a general action, which Napoleon so much desired, and which the Austrians, since the surrender of Vienna, had no good motive for hazarding. It was perhaps possible to prevent the French from making a lodgment ont he left bank of the Danube, at a sinuosity so favourable, and under cover of the powerful batteries which had been established in the Lobau; nor would it have been pruden, ont he part of the Archduke, to expose his troops to their fire, by taking position close to the river, for the purpose of preventing the French from avancing into the plain. But village, 1000 yards distant -- military points -- upon the possession of which, obviously, the fate of the battle about to be fought must turn -- so far from being abandoned, should have been strongly occupied, entrenched, and defended to the last extremity: -- the severe losses sustained in recovering those villages, were tremendous sacrifices of much gallant blood, shed to retrieve the fatal error of not having secured positions so essential as these were found to be, to the Archduke's operations.

If the Austrians had attacked the French army early on the 20th, and had combined with the assault such an attempt to destroy the bridges, as that which proved successful on the 21st and 22d, the passage of the river could not have been effected; and the Austrian army would have been in a condition to follow up its success, instead of being so weakened by the subsequent victory, as to be forced to remain inactive, whilst Napoleon was preparing for a more formidable operation.

From the time that the bridge, 1, (Plate 6) on the first branch of the river was broken, on the morning of the 22d, the French army remained till night without communication with the right bank; and towards the evening, was actually in want of ammunition. Napoleon began to with draw his troops at dark on the 22d, into the Lobau; and before day-light on the morning of the 23rd, had effected his retreat: the bridge, 1, (Plate 6) across the third branch of the river was then withdrawn; and as soon as the bridge communicating with the right bank of the river could be repaired, a part of the French army crossed to that side of the Danube.

During all these operations the Archduke Charles made no attempt to reap the fruits of his victory. If a vigorous attack had been made early on the 23d, before the bridges, 1,1X, (Plate 6) from the Lobau to the right bank of the river, were repaired, whilst Napoleon's whole army was crowded in masses upon the island; and, as it afterwards appeared, in want of ammunition, there can be no doubt that very important results might have obtained.

A tragédia provocou a morte a 59 pessoas.

M60A1 Armored Vehicle Landing Bridge

Veiculo Lancador de Ponte - Wolverine (EUA)

Heavy Assault Bridge System H82510 - XM104 Wolverine

XM104 Wolverine
Heavy Assault Bridge System H82510

The Fiscal Year 2001 Army budget request included decisions to restructure or "divest" a number of programs in order to provide some of the resources to support its transformation to achieve the ambitious deployment goals outlined in the October 1999 Army Vision. The restructured programs are the Crusader and the Future Scout and Cavalry System. The "divestitures" include Heliborne Prophet (Air), MLRS Smart Tactical Rocket (MSTAR), Stinger Block II, Command and Control Vehicle (C2V), Grizzly, Wolverine, and the Army Tactical Missile System Block IIA. Funding for these programs was reallocated to fund the Army Vision transformation strategy.

The Wolverine (Formerly the Heavy Assault Bridge) is an armored vehicle designed to carry, emplace, and retrieve an assault bridge capable of supporting 70 ton loads such as the M1A2 main battle tank. The Wolverine is a combat support system which integrates advanced bridging, hydraulic and electronic control capabilities into a single survivable system. Wolverine fills the need for a combat gap crossing capability with the same mobility, survivability, and transportability as the M1 Abrams tank. WOLVERINE is to be a one for one replacement for the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) in select heavy divisional engineer battalions, armored cavalry regiments and heavy separate brigades.

WOLVERINE consists of an M1 Abrams tank chassis modified to transport, launch and retrieve a Military Load Class (MLC) 70 bridge across gaps up to 24 meters wide. WOLVERINE will be air-transportable in the C-5A aircraft and will be comparable in mobility and survivability to the Abrams tank. A crew of two MOS 12B will operate the system. WOLVERINE will provide the Army's Digital Division with mobility support (i.e. assault bridging) for Decisive Operations IAW Army Vision 2010.

The WOLVERINE provides the dominant maneuver force with the capability to span gaps up to 24 meters (m) with little or no loss in momentum. The bridge, made of four interchangeable sections, is 26 m long, 4 m wide, weighs 10,886 kg (12 tons), and is required to permit crossing of a heavy task force consisting of Military Load Class (MLC) 70 vehicles moving at 16 km/hr. The hull will be based on the future M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP) chassis modified to support a two-man crew and the bridge launcher assembly. The crew can launch the bridge while under armor protection from either crew position in five minutes after reaching the crossing site and can retrieve it from either end in ten minutes. The WOLVERINE will retain significant compatibility with the M1A2 fleet. The dominant maneuver force will support the WOLVERINE's bridging operations with ongoing direct and indirect fire and air support. The WOLVERINE will directly replace the existing Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge in selected engineer companies of mechanized battalions, armored cavalry regiments, and heavy brigades.

WOLVERINE is employed as an integral part of the M1A2 SEP/M2A3 equipped digital maneuver battalion task force. WOLVERINE as part of the Breach Force and supported by friendly direct and indirect fires, will provide a 24 meter one way gap crossing capability for MLC 70 normal crossing loads with minimal preparation and with little or no loss of task force momentum. The bridge structure will be durable enough to withstand 5000 crossings of 70-ton vehicles and be launched and retrieved at least 2200 times without major repair.

The Wolverine is an Acquisition Category II program that began in 1983. A foreign comparative test was conducted in 1989, and an October 1990 Milestone I/II decision moved the program into the Engineering and Manufacturing phase. In December 1990, the program was canceled due to a reduction in Research and Development (R&D) funding. In December 1991, the Wolverine program was reinstated and identified as a Desert Storm initiative. Funding was obtained for a two-phased EMD, which included a comparative test between three bridges: "Christchurch No. 10 Bridge", built by SMS and Thompson Def Projects; the "Leguan," which was built by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) and MAN/GHH; and the "Double Fold Scissors Bridge," built by BMY and IMI.

In 1994, a contract was awarded to GDLS, which initiated the second phase of EMD, to integrate the Bridge and Launcher with the M1A1 Abrams chassis and produce two prototype Wolverines for limited developmental and operational testing. In January 1996, a decision was made to migrate the M1A1 chassis to the M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP). The decision to upgrade to the SEP configuration was based on the need for achieving greater commonality with the Abrams upgrade efforts through the use of common hardware and manufacturing processes to reduce production, operation, and support costs. In August 1996, a base vehicle contract was awarded for two vehicles with an option in December 1996, for an additional four pilot vehicles.

Following a significant increase in the WOLVERINE program's procurement objective to the currently planned 465 units, the Army's Acquisition Executive in a memorandum dated June 4, 1996, notified OSD that the Army designated the WOLVERINE an ACAT II program and a covered system for LFT&E. The program was added to the T&E oversight list in December 1996 for LFT&E only. This system is not an operational test and evaluation oversight program. MSII for the WOLVERINE program, which occurred in June 1992, predated the assignment of the system to the oversight list. DOT&E participated in the WOLVERINE LFT&E Integrated Process Team (IPT) beginning in May 1996 and approved the completed LFT&E strategy in March 1997. Dedicated LFT events began in 4QFY97 and extended through 3QFY99.

The approved LFT&E strategy includes three phases of testing: ballistic testing against a deployed bridge; full-up, system-level testing against a production representative launcher mounted atop a prototype chassis; full-up system-level testing against a production representative system. The LFT&E IPT completed the LFT&E strategy development and finalized test and evaluation plans for, and executed the first phase of, the LFT&E program. Test objectives satisfied during this test phase included data collection and assessment of the ballistic response of the bridge and its constituent materials, calibration of structural models supporting evaluations of the capabilities of damaged bridges, and the investigation of Battle Damage Assessment and Repair techniques with the assistance of soldiers from the Ordnance Center and School.

DOT&E approved the test design and evaluation plans for the second phase of the LFT&E program in November 1997. The second phase will employ full-up system-level tests of a production-representative bridge launcher on a prototype Wolverine chassis. The LFT&E program will culminate in a third phase with full-up system-level tests of a production-representative Wolverine system.

During Phase I testing, bridge elements were subjected to over 30 events including attack from small arms, mortars, a mine, an artillery shell, and an anti-tank guided missile. To support a realistic system vulnerability evaluation, the threats and test conditions encompassed the system requirements and explored the response of the bridge to more severe threats that could be encountered on the battlefield. These tests explored the ballistic response of the bridge materials and the structural response of the bridge with static loads applied during firings and with dynamics loads applied following firings to assess operational capability following an attack. The dynamic loads consisted of multiple crossings of the bridge with an up-weighted M1 tank (to simulate the full expected load). Throughout the testing, the deployed bridge elements met or exceeded expectations and meets requirements as currently stated.

The program is in Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) or MS IIIA Phase and funded for First Unit Equipped (FUE) in Sep 00 to 4th ID. Initial Operational Capability (IOC) is Oct 00. General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) finalized their LRIP contract negotiations under the M1A2 SEP Production Contract with the Government, with contract awarded 9 Apr 98. Under this contract, GDLS is to fabricate six prototypes for delivery to the government in the Mar-Aug 99 timeframe.

Brazilian Logistic Support Bridge (LSB) in Itaberaí / Goiás / Brazil

Turkey buys 36 Leguan Bridge Laying armoured vehicles

The Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Turkey agreed in November 2008 that the Turkish Armed Forces will buy 36 bridge laying armoured vehicles of the LEGUAN type, which is based on the LEOPARD 1.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) will supply the systems as part of an engagement letter. The final negotiations are currently under way between KMW and the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB). All expectations are that the contract will be signed soon.

Within the programme, the Turkish Armed Forces will manufacture and assemble substantial parts of the systems itself in Turkey. The joint project underscores the close German-Turkish cooperation in the field of armoured vehicles and family vehicles.

International deployments for bridge system:.

The LEGUAN bridge laying armoured vehicle can be controlled by only one person with the hatch closed and install a load category MLC 80 bridge that is 26 metres long in approximately five minutes using an electronic control system. KMW has already produced the LEGUAN bridge-layer on the basis of the LEOPARD 1 or LEOPARD 2 battle tank for the Norwegian, Greek, Belgian and Finnish armed forces. The bridge-laying system can, however, also be mounted on other used or new battle tank chassis. For example, it is in use on the chassis of the Polish PT91, the American M1 "Wolverine" and the M47/M60 in Spain.

But the bridge can also be laid by wheeled vehicles, such as the MAN 8x8 and the 10x10 vehicle from Finnish company SISU. With the aid of additional pontoons, the LEGUAN can also be used to construct ferries of various load categories, and if necessary link them together to form floating bridges.

O

Segundo Herazo, é o primeiro submarino confiscado no país.

Venha visitar e prestigiar.
